As we’re sure you’re well aware by now, Hurricane Helene has brought catastrophic damage to southern Appalachia, including many communities central to the Appalachian Trail, including Hot Springs, Erwin, Damascus, and beyond. These places hold a special place in our hearts for the warmth and hospitality they’ve offered to countless AT hikers over the years.
Members of the communities that have supported AT thru-hikers for so many years now find themselves cut off by damaged roads and without power, reliable water, and critical supplies. Many have seen their homes and businesses damaged or destroyed. The overall death toll from Helene is now above 100.
The Appalachian Trail hiking community has long drawn support from these small towns, and now it’s time for hikers to return the favor.
