his homesteaders’ heirloom was first mentioned in The Country Gentleman magazine in 1864 under the name of Texas Pole. It was introduced as Kentucky Wonder by James J.H. Gregory & Sons in 1877 and has been popular ever since. The 6-8 inch green pods are tender when cooked and have great flavor. In 1896 Peter Henderson & Co. said, “This we regard as far ahead of any other green Pole Bean.Kentucky Wonder pole beans, also known as Old Homestead beans are known for their vigorous climbing habit and extended harvest period. They thrive in full sun and well-drained, rich soil. Adding compost or aged manure before planting can improve soil fertility and water retentionKentucky Wonder pole beans have vigorous, long vines that need sturdy support such as trellises, poles, or a teepee structure. Water the plants regularly, especially during flowering and pod formation, but avoid overhead watering to reduce the risk of fungal diseases. Apply a balanced, slow-release fertilizer at planting and side-dress with compost or a nitrogen-rich fertilizer once the plants start flowering​.
